Women Who Shake Up The World To Make It Better

DrSylviaEarle

Five hundred (500) women from 45 countries are gathering in Miami, Florida, U.S.A. this week on a mission: to make the world better.

The International Women’s Forum (IWF) runs Wednesday through Friday, and will include top women leaders from the fields of government, business, research, innovation and science.

Here’s a snapshot of one of the women who will be honored:

Dr. Sylvia Earle (pictured), an acclaimed marine biologist, has swum with fish in just about every ocean in the world.

She’s explored miles and miles of coral reefs, scaled undersea mountains, walked untethered on the sea floor and holds the world record for the deepest underwater dive in a submersible vessel.

During her lifetime, she has spent 7,000 hours diving under the sea, a watery realm she has passionately championed for half a century.

And at 74, she is still shaking up the world about the endangered blue part of our planet.

Chicago (Rogers Park), Illinois, U.S.A.

Chicago (Rogers Park), Illinois, U.S.A.

It’s a spectacular day in Chicago.  Wherever you are at this moment, make the most of it.  I am getting ready to head over to the Glenwood Avenue Arts Festival where folks in the community exhibit their wares, many of which can quite easily be exported.

“Women entrepreneurship has become a new trend since gender equality has improved greatly in Taiwan. It not only helps women to stand on their own feet, but also benefits society and the country by creating jobs, ” says Vice Premier Chiu Cheng-hsiung.

Women Unite in Engineering Across the Globe

nationalengineersweek2009wegg

The next generation of engineers and innovators will face new challenges and will be called upon to play a vital role in helping solve the world’s future health, safety, environmental and economic problems.

To help prepare these future leaders, National Engineers Week Foundation presents the 5th Annual Global Marathon for, by and about Women in Engineering.

Sponsored by Agilent, Motorola and the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, this live, 24-hour worldwide forum provides information, insight, and inspiration for women and girls on topics related to careers in engineering and technology.

The Global Marathon begins at noon (EDT) Wednesday, March 11th and runs continuously through noon (EDT), Thursday, March 12th.

“The Global Marathon is a great way to unite women from different cultures who have similar goals and experiences,” said Maria de Magalhaes, a BP environmental engineer/advisor helping to organize the marathon in UK/Europe. “As a woman who was educated in Portugal, Austria and the UK, I am just one example of the global nature of engineering and science. Engineering is a worldwide enterprise and that diversity makes us stronger as innovators and thought leaders.”

This year’s Global Marathon is themed “Connecting Women to Engineer a Better Future; Because Dreams Need Doing.”

Global Networking, Social Media and a Cuppa Joe

social-media-breakfast-sallie_thumb

Looking for new ways to network on those endless roadtrips?

Try Social Media Breakfasts.

This morning I went to the inaugural SF-East Bay Social Media Breakfast and met over thirty new faces. These people ran the gamut in both age and background. Five of them worked in areas that were directly relevant to my business. One turned out to be a friend of a friend. And interestingly, well over half of them were women.

Currently held in 18 cities around the world — and spreading rapidly — Social Media Breakfasts pull together a group of social media experts, enthusiasts and newcomers to share uses, successes and learning curves related to social media applications. Experts briefly present and then open the floor to attendees so that projects, experiences and relevant event/contact information can be shared. Everyone is welcome, and this one was free.

Thanks to JD Lasica for presenting, Shel Holtz and Kenny Lauer for organizing, Liveworld for sponsoring the event at Cesar, and the Society for New Communications Research for getting the word out.

Calling All Women in Global Business

womeninglobalbusinesseventwegg

Australia is the host country for a “Women in Global Business” National Seminar Series (refer to Women in Export Program).

Participants will learn about specific opportunities and strategies for building sustainable export programs from Austrade’s highly experienced in-market Trade Commissioners and local case study speakers.

Australia’s initiative is very much in line with the mission of WEGG:

The Women in Export program aims to ensure women in business are aware of, and have access to, the full range of Austrade’s services to assist them in becoming successful and sustainable exporters. This is being done by:

  • encouraging businesswomen and businesses owned or operated by women to export
  • identifying businesswomen who are active in export and who could become role models for other women in business
  • working with existing women’s networks to help them achieve a greater export focus among their membership

For more information about the seminar series (starts April 2), go here.
