How to Ensure a Successful International Product Launch

allison-larson-2

Alison Larson, Founder, World Blazer Consulting

Alison Larson (pictured), founder of World Blazer Consulting, knows how to sell a brand successfully overseas. The proof lies in the history of her professional career.  She spent more than 23 years developing global business for such esteemed companies as Carter’s and OshKosh B’Gosh.

During Alison’s September WEGG webinar “8 Critical Lessons to Ensure a Successful International Product Launch,” we had three questions asked by attendees that were not addressed due to time constraints.  They are as follows:

  1. Should an attorney or an experienced businessperson or consultant negotiate contract terms with a prospective international partner?
  2. What is the difference between a “simple” country and a “complex” country when it comes to doing international business?
  3. What is the best way to approach a prospective distributor or other international representative if you want to do business with them?

Here are the answers.

Mary Dillon: Making the World More Beautiful

screen-shot-2016-10-23-at-4-13-13-pmMary Dillon (pictured), who runs Ulta Beauty, a place where women can get all their beauty needs met, is bucking a trend.  Where many big name retailers are closing locations, the beauty retailer recently opened its 900th location, more than double the number five years ago.  The company reached total sales of $3.9 billion in 2015, nearly three times 2008 sales levels.

Will there be room for international growth at Ulta over the next couple of years?  That’s the question that begs to be asked.  With its rapidly growing e-commerce business, one would think so.

Talented Women Taking on the World of Mariachi

Mariachi is a folkloric tradition as macho as it is Mexican. Eight years ago (2008), Mireya Ramos and Shae Fiol sought to up-end convention and founded Mariachi Flor de Toloache, New York City’s first and only all-female mariachi band. With their bandmates Julie Acosta and Eunice Aparicio, the musicians traded in traditional mariachi skirts for homemade suits and created an empowering space for women while staying true to the music and spirit of mariachi.

In 2015, the group was nominated for 2015 Latin Grammy in Best Ranchera Album Category!

Against All Odds: How a 27-Year Old Grew a Company Into a Global Empire

againstalloddshowa27yearoldgrewacompanytobecomeaglobalempire

Perfect timing.  Considering the current political firestorm taking place between USA presidential candidates Trump and Clinton, here’s a different twist.  Julie Smolyansky (pictured), the C.E.O. of Lifeway Foods, recalls the moment that fueled her drive to prove critics wrong when her father suddenly had a heart attack and passed away in 2002.  At the time, Julie had been working with her father for five years.  Here’s the comment she received:

“There’s no way that a 27-year-old girl can run this company. That’s it. It’s done,” he [one of her late father’s friends] told her. The line galvanized Smolyansky. “That really fueled me and inspired me to prove him wrong. I found the courage to ignore him and to keep moving forward.”

Since then, revenue at Lifeway Foods has increased six-fold under Julie’s leadership and expanded across the United States and internationally. The global company now has a market capitalization of about $250 million.

Women Entrepreneurs Need Access to International Markets to GROW

women-entrepreneurs-needaccesstointernationalmarketstogrow

Our Coalition Partner, Women Impacting Public Policy, talks about ten things our U.S. presidential candidates need to know about women entrepreneurs.  We could not agree more with one of their points:

Women business owners seek markets beyond US borders. With 95% of consumers living outside of the U.S. representing 2/3 of the world’s purchasing power, women’s growth must be fueled by access to international markets. Strengthening the existing support of the Federal government for small firms should complement non-profit and private export assistance to small businesses. Our government must continue its efforts strengthening intellectual property (IP) rights and protections at home and abroad to encourage more entrepreneurship and the global expansion of women-owned firms.
