Issue 20: January 2026

Tell us about your business.
After 20 years of fostering innovation and creativity in the field of education, I was led to lean into my own creativity and invented decorative knob covers called Knobēz. I had the idea of adding a clutter-free decoration to my holiday decorations in 2021 when I found myself moving all the decorations off my countertops in my kitchen to make room for the food during the Christmas Eve brunch I was hosting for family and friends. I wanted to change the look of my hardware without actually having to change my hardware, because changing out hardware can be time consuming and expensive. The idea of decorative knob covers was born that day in November 2021 and I haven’t looked back. I soon realized that I had stumbled upon white space in the market when I was unable to find the products I desired in the marketplace. I started looking into patenting my invention in the spring of 2022. I started with a patentability search and then filed for a provisional utility patent in the summer of 2022.
The first Knobēz prototype collection went online during the 2022 holiday season. At first, I manufactured blank black half sphere Knobēz with a US manufacturer and hand-glittered and sealed every single one myself. I sold 40 12-pack units my first year of launching Knobēz.
After receiving amazing feedback from my customers, I decided to look for a larger factory to partner with, who had the capacity to produce a retail-ready product and also create a pad-printed peppermint design. I launched my Red Peppermint Knobēz in June 2023, and it has been my best-selling product every year! Knobēz was also able to launch a decorative handle cover called Handlez by Knobēz that covers straight style hardware in 2023.
After launching my new Knobēz products on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, they quickly went viral. Customers and followers alike were requesting more Knobēz collections like Pumpkins, Jack-o’-lanterns and Snowflakes. After three years of going through the patent process, I received my utility patent for Decorative Knob Covers from the USPTO in March 2025. Changing the look of your hardware without any tools has never been easier!
When you started exporting internationally, what challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Shipping internationally is definitely a pain point. Once your products leave the warehouse, you have to trust that delivery companies are going to do what they must to get your customers their order. I started shipping internationally from my direct consumer website, knobez.com, in 2024. In the midst of my first time shipping to Canada during that year’s holiday season, I learned on the news that the Canadian postal service went on strike. I had to field countless emails from Canadian customers wondering where their orders were. From what I could tell at the time, their orders had arrived in Canada, but officials were holding them until the strike ended. I am looking to partner with a Canadian fulfillment center in 2026 to add Canadian distribution on my Amazon, Walmart, and Target platforms.
Meanwhile, I am still trying to figure out the duties and fees associated with international shipping, because some of my customers pay the shipping charges at checkout, but upon delivery the shipping companies request a separate duty fee at time of delivery.
What advice would you give women entrepreneurs looking to expand their business internationally?
If you have a unique and innovative idea, I encourage you to protect it and patent it. Hire an IP attorney who you trust and who will answer all of your questions about intellectual property, trademarks, and copyrights. If you have a great idea and are headed into the marketplace, just know that you need to prepare yourself to fight for it. Having a great idea for an invention is just the beginning. It’s not only about having a great idea, it’s about the execution, as well. Be prepared to wear all of the hats early on in your new business but also surround yourself with other professionals that can help you when you need to start handing off some of your tasks. I have been able to scale so quickly because I’ve had someone in mind whenever I needed to move forward with handing off tasks in my business.
Entrepreneurship can be a lonely venture at times, so I encourage women to follow and reach out to other entrepreneurs, especially female entrepreneurs, early on. Find and follow communities of like-minded female entrepreneurs to bounce ideas off of, because they will provide a unique perspective not only to your business, but also to the launching of your brand.
