Tell us about your business.

Chicago Expert Importers is a full-service sourcing, import logistics, warehousing, and distribution company that specializes in third-party logistics (3PL). Our business helps companies efficiently source products from international markets, manage the logistics of importing, and ensure smooth storage and distribution to end customers. By leveraging our expertise in supply chain management, we provide tailored solutions that streamline the entire process—from sourcing to final delivery. Our goal is to support businesses by optimizing their operations, reducing costs, and expanding their reach through reliable, efficient logistics.

What inspired you to start this business?

My husband Leonard Ma and I were inspired to start this business when we saw a real opportunity to bridge the gap between companies looking for global product sourcing and the growing demand for high-quality, affordable products from international markets. We recognized the need for a seamless, reliable service that would help businesses navigate the complexities of global trade, ensuring they could obtain quality products at competitive prices while building strong, lasting relationships with suppliers.

What challenges did you face when selling internationally, and how did you overcome them?

While our clients sell internationally, we focus on sourcing products globally, which presents its own set of challenges. Key obstacles include production delays, extended lead times, variations in product quality, and differing expectations around product design. To overcome these, we prioritize clear and detailed communication with all parties involved, ensuring both sides fully understand each other’s perspectives and needs. This approach has helped us manage expectations, foster collaboration, and source high-quality products that meet our clients’ specifications.

What advice would you give to women entrepreneurs looking to expand internationally?

For women entrepreneurs looking to expand through global sourcing, my advice is to focus on understanding cultural differences and building strong, reliable networks with international partners. It’s also essential to be resilient and adaptable because global business is often affected by uncontrollable factors, such as changing government regulations, contract negotiations, and even natural disasters that can impact lead times. A key strategy to mitigate these risks is to have a safety stock in place. Many of our customers use our safety stock program, which supports their 3-month inventory supply forecast with timely replenishments to ensure regular shipping to support their U.S. production with Just-In-Time (JIT) delivery. By being proactive, fostering open communication, and preparing for the unexpected, women entrepreneurs can confidently navigate the challenge.
