Celebrating International Day of the Girl 2025
“I think the best role models for women are people who are fruitfully and confidently themselves, who bring light into the world.”
— Meryl Streep
October 11th marked UNICEF and the UN’s 13th International Day of the Girl Child, which “is a key global moment on which to celebrate girls everywhere, amplifying their voices, actions and leadership. It is a day that belongs to everyone who cares about girls and their rights.” wegg® is proud to honor this day in celebration of the empowerment of girls everywhere, as the next generation of women entrepreneurs is all around us. The theme of this year’s commemorative day of action was, “The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis.”
Supporting the enfranchisement and wellbeing of girls across the globe means supporting the women who will be the leaders, changemakers, visionaries, and success stories of tomorrow. International Day of the Girl 2025 is an ever-present reminder of all of the work that still needs to be done, as well as all of the strides that must be taken. UNICEF reports of the statistics of gender disparity among youth on the global scale:
- Girls aged 15-19 are twice as likely as boys to not be in education, employment or training. In fragile contexts, they’re nearly 90% more likely to be out of school than girls in stable settings.
- Nearly 1 in 4 girls aged 15-19 who have ever been in a relationship have experienced intimate partner violence.
- 1 in 5 young women aged 20-24 were married as children. In fragile settings, child marriage rates are almost double the global average.
- Crisis, conflict and displacement all increase the risk of child marriage, sexual violence and maternal mortality for girls.
- In the last 20 years, self-harm has been a leading cause of death among adolescent girls.
The reality of the numbers cannot be ignored, and the rights of girls across the world must be actualized. Let the International Day of the Girl Child be a checkpoint of progress every year until equality is realized.
