Are Women Willing to Wait As Long As 170 Years to Establish Parity with Men?

According to the latest report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), women may have to wait as long as 170 years to establish parity with men when it comes to pay and employment opportunities.  Who needs that?  It is a fact that no country in the world has closed its gender gap.  The only way around this barrier is for women to start more businesses, and here at WEGG, we hope with our help they take them global.

Take the UK, for example, where in an effort to ramp up women starting businesses, they are working with Facebook and Enterprise Nation, a network of small businesses, to deliver training to 10,000 women business owners across the country.  Facebook claims that only 20 percent of the country’s 5.4 million small businesses are currently started by women.

What the ultimate goal here?  To give women access to new online and offline training resources to provide them with the digital skills and mobile tools necessary to grow their business.

It is a well-quoted figure that equality for women in the labour force would add $28 trillion to the global economy by 2025.

Women Don’t Always Get a Fair Shake In Our World

We’ve come a long way from the discrimination and struggles faced in the previous century when it came to getting an education and finding a job, but the sad reality is that when you look at the hard facts, there is still a fair amount of inequality when it comes to women’s role in the working world.

Here are ten eye-opening stats to see where women really are in the working world and get some inspiration to see where changes need to be made and where advancements can be lauded for this generation and the next.

  1. Women comprise 46% of the total U.S. labor force.
  2. Women make only 77.5 cents for every dollar that men earn.
  3. The more education a woman has, the greater the disparity in her wages.
  4. Women may work longer to receive the promotions that provide access to higher pay.
  5. Women business owners employ 35% more people than all the Fortune 500 companies combined.
  6. Women account for 46% of the labor force, but 59% of workers making less than $8 an hour.
  7. Only 53% of employers provide at least some replacement pay during periods of maternity leave.
  8. Four in ten businesses worldwide have no women in senior management.
  9. Women earned less than men in 99% of all occupations.
  10. Minority women fare the worst when it comes to equal pay.
